BIG BEAR BOOK
ACHIEVEMENT 21

 Cub Scouts and Den Leader

Achievement 21, "Build a Model," parts a, b, and d in The Big Bear Cub Scout Book requires the cub scouts to build a model from a kit and build a display for the model with a mountain, meadow, canyon, or river. This achievement gives the cub scout, his family and den experience in building small dioramas.

To meet this goal the Bear Dens of Pack 51 in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, build model railroad dioramas. Each diorama includes a box car kit which the boys build and weather using chalks which are fixed in place with a spray flat finish. While the cars are drying, the boys begin work on a 9" X 6" piece of polyurethane foam to build a small diorama. Scouts sculpt, paint and decorate the foam to create a realistic scene.

Cub Scouts and leader watch a video tape At a den meeting the scouts and their leaders first view a 10 minute video tape on weathering with chalks. Members of the DuPage Division of the National Model Railroad Association (NMRA) assist the cub scouts and their leaders in the construction and weathering of car kits. They also demonstrate various methods of diorama construction. Senior WEBELOS scouts help the younger boys with their modeling.
Cubs and NMRA member build and weather box cars Each February the DuPage Division of the National Model Railroad Association has a popular vote contest at their division meeting. Cub scouts have the opportunity to enter the contest and have their car and diorama judged by the Achievement Program chair and committee. Cars are judged for construction, operation and appearance. The dioramas are judged for construction, appearance, realism and difficulty of construction. Cubs and NMRA Member work on diorama

The contest awards First, Second, and Third place prizes. Winners received a ribbon as well as an additional model railroad kit.
